Earth Action grants access to global plastic database ahead of INC 5

Earth Action has today granted all governments access to its global plastic data platform Plasteax.

Plasteax has been in use for over three years, offering reliable plastic production, leakage, and waste management metrics to a variety of high-profile organisations.

Its data is already in use by teams at select Fortune 500 companies, leading sustainability consultancies such as Quantis and South Pole, and organisations such as the World Economic Forum’s Global Plastic Action Partnership and WWF.

Over the past nine months, Earth Action has been working to digitise the platform for easier use by fast-moving consumer goods (FMCGs) companies and to enable the integration of new data into the Plasteax model.

Earth Action is collaborating with governments to integrate their plastic data into the Plasteax system, expanding the world’s most comprehensive plastic database.

This collaboration will allow governments to access high-quality data that can inform their waste policies, particularly in preparation for the upcoming Global Plastic Treaty negotiations and post-ratification.

The announcement comes ahead of the final round of negotiations for a UN Global Plastic Treaty in November, with governments and corporations likely being required to scale up plastic reporting across supply chains and waste management systems post-Treaty ratification.

The Plasteax platform is positioned to help both corporations and governments stay ahead of evolving plastic disclosure requirements. It provides access to waste management data for 72 countries and counting, nine different polymer types, and six packaging categories.

Plasteax is unique in combining global-scale data with local information, creating a standardised model for reliable comparisons across regions and industries. By collaborating with governments, Earth Action ensures that this Unified Data Source harmonises reporting data, offering consistent methodology and definitions globally.

Sarah Perreard, Co-CEO, Earth Action: « Data is an essential of change, without a clear understanding of a brand or country’s plastic usage, effective action to prevent our environment and bodies being polluted cannot be achieved.”

“Plasteax was designed to be a solution and to empower the brand owners, NGOs and governments of the world to implement and scale effective waste mitigation strategies throughout supply chains.

“We are excited by the prospect of bringing the platform to all governments for free, as well as the wider sector in 2024, so collaboration can be maximised post-UN Treaty between government, industry and civil society.”

Nathan Cole, Global Director of Plastics, CDP: « As we look ahead to the Global Plastics Treaty, it’s critical to have a unified approach to data collection that supports both governments and corporations in managing their plastic data transparently and effectively.

“Plasteax offers a comprehensive, standardized solution, integrating government and corporate data to provide a trusted central resource for plastic footprint management.

“At CDP, we believe that collaboration through platforms like Plasteax is essential to ensure that all stakeholders are aligned on consistent data and definitions. This will help meet the demands of upcoming regulations and drive real change in plastic waste mitigation. »

Julie Gossen, Responsible Investment Specialist, Degroof Petercam Asset Management: “Plasteax has been instrumental in shaping our country sustainability assessments, particularly in understanding the impact of plastic waste management for our investment decisions.

“We actively have engaged dialogues with governments on addressing plastic pollution and encourage them to leverage Plasteax as well. By doing so, we can enhance the quality of available data, benefiting both policy-making and corporate sustainability.

“Reliable, comprehensive data is crucial for effective action against plastic pollution and for supporting responsible, long-term investment strategies.”

Darren West, Global Head of Circular Economy Solutions, SAP: “SAP is proud to be partnering with Plasteax to further strengthen data quality and support more sustainable practices across industries.

“By integrating Plasteax’s comprehensive data into SAP’s solutions, we enable consumer goods companies—80% of which already use SAP—to align their sustainability reporting with global standards.

“This collaboration not only benefits governments in crafting informed policies, but also helps corporations drive impactful change, particularly in designing and developing more sustainable packaging. »

As part of this initiative, governments, NGOs, the financial sector, and private corporations are invited to join a one-hour webinar where the Plasteax platform and its new digital features will be unveiled.

The session will include case studies demonstrating how organizations across various sectors—corporations, financial institutions, and public bodies—are already utilizing Plasteax data to drive sustainability strategies.

The webinar will offer an exclusive look at how the platform can support stakeholders in aligning their plastic reporting and waste management efforts with global standards.

The webinar will take place on Thursday 7th November at 2pm CEST. To register, please visit: https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_zpGylj4ZRKqVvGaRbKvzLw
